Mrs. Roma Balwani’s long-standing tenure as a senior management professional over four decades in the corporate sector has served the best-in-class companies of the Indian corporate sector. She has enriched her career and her achievements and contributions to organisations & society are truly laudable, based on the stellar record of both her corporate career & her focus on social causes.
She is also an Independent Director of John Cockerill, India (formerly CMI FPE Ltd.) Chair, CSR & NRC Committees. Recently the first BBSR report was published under her guidance and mentorship as the Chair of the CSR & ESG Committee of JCIL. She has been recently inducted into the Board of Godavari Power & Ispat Group. She will guide the board deliberations on sustainable best practices in ESG and bring the company to the forefront as a leading player in the steel industry.
Her expertise & impactful leadership as President, Vedanta Group especially during the Covid period ha been exceptional and has created a favourable connect with all stakeholders & government due to their philanthropic initiatives to save jobs, contribute to the economy and save lives.
Her extensive experience as a leader & part of the top management has taken the Mahindra Rise brand to greater heights as an ethical & well-governed organisation. She joined the company when it was a 2 billion dollar company and charted a strategic communication blueprint aligned to business goals for the brand Mahindra till her superannuation when the company’s growth reached 20 billion dollars. She was part of the CSR & Diversity councils at Mahindra. Her contributions were truly noteworthy.
During her tenure at Mahindra Group, Chairman Anand Mahindra was well-positioned as a humane leader and a global statesman with her efforts.
Her role at Vedanta was to build a robust brand strategy for the group which has a focus on giving back to communities & society at large and as a natural resource major, contributing towards nation-building that will help in the economic development of our country and position the brand as One Vedanta to diverse stakeholders across India and globally. In this enabling role, Roma aligned the group’s Communication and Sustainable Development strategy in a socially responsible, ethical, and environmentally friendly manner that positively impacts and improves the quality of life of communities. She has been a member of the Group Executive Committee which comprises the leadership team at Vedanta.
She has overseen the key portfolios of Sustainability & CSR and championed best practices for sustainable measures on health, safety, and environment to sustain the ‘social license to operate’. The community development initiatives focusing on education, women empowerment, and health have brought many accolades to the group.
Her focus on stakeholder engagement globally has included transparent dialogue on the ‘Social License to Operate’ with socially responsible investors, bankers, lenders, business partners, civil society, and trade bodies. Roma has promoted a collaborative mindset within the organization and encouraged the teams to create awareness amongst communities on the ESG vision of the company. Her efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic have been instrumental in providing essential goods and services to the local community.
As Head of Corporate Communications at Aptech she was responsible for media relations, internal communications, overseeing the corporate website, marketing PR, community relations, event management, brand strategy, and global corporate relations.
As editor of their newsletter, she has published many articles on soft skills in leading Indian newspapers and magazines. She created the content for the company’s e-induction program for new employees. She also conducted programs for management students and has been a speaker at management forums.
She was responsible for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at Aptech and launched education programs for the underprivileged sections of society free of cost.
In Oslo, she continued her association with Aptech as their Business Associate and handled business development for their e-learning services in Scandinavia. She has contracts from one of the leading Norwegian oil and gas majors in the private sector.
Also in Oslo, she was a Strategy Consultant to a UK-based travel portal ebookers.com with 13 offices across Europe. Here she developed a communication plan to launch a new line of travel products. She was also an Advisor to the MD of the Oslo operations to develop strategic plans to achieve key business goals and implement strategic change within the organization
During the Covid pandemic, she created the ‘Compassionate Communication’ movement within the PR fraternity.
She has received several prestigious awards and recognition for her outstanding performance and stellar contribution to the PR Industry both in India & globally.
She is the pro bono CEO of the Indian Deaf Cricket Association. Her dedication to a social cause such as disability sport is testimony to her passion for promoting diversity & inclusion for the hearing-impaired youth community across India through sportsmanship.
She is also the Advisory Board Member, TeamLease EdTech.
